In the canton of Aargau, compulsory schooling lasts eleven years.
The first eight years of school are divided into two years of kindergarten and six years of primary school. This is followed by the three-year upper secondary school (lower secondary level). Upper secondary school is divided into three types of school: middle school, secondary school and district school. There are also special forms of education aimed at children with special needs. After compulsory schooling, young people usually learn a trade or attend a middle school.
